Hello和 welcome to The Monitor, WIRED’s culture news roundup. The big news of the day is, of course, the Oscar nominations, but there’s more than that. Let’s get started.
Despite the anticipation they drum up, the Oscars are nothing if not predictable. (Seriously, predicting who will be nominated for和 win, Academy Awards is practically a news media—和 social media—sport。） This year is seemingly no different, as, once again, the Academy announced the nominations today和 the field is largely white 和 not a single woman was given a best-director nod. (The nominees in that category were Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Martin Scorsese for The Irishman, Sam Mendes for 1917, Bong Joon Ho for Parasite和 Todd Phillips for 滑稽角色。） 滑稽角色 led the nominations across the board, with 11—including one for best picture, a category that includes 1917, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood和 Parasite （该 first South Korean film to be nominated for best picture 和 best international feature). Overall, The Irishman, 1917和 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood each got 10 nods, while Jojo Rabbit, Little Women, Marriage Story和 Parasite all nabbed six. In an interesting twist, Netflix received more nominations—24—than any other major Hollywood studio or distributor, thanks in large part to the performance of The Irishman 和 Marriage Story.
Remember that 疯 Westworld 压轴 that seemed to happen a few millennia ago? (OK, June of 2018。） Well, you’re about to find out what happens next. HBO announced today that the sci-fi thriller will return for Season 3 on March 15. Then和 only then, will we be able to decipher what’s happening in this new trailer.
One more bit of awards season news: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the next Golden Globes in 2021, though the exact date of the awards show hasn’t been determined yet. The duo previously hosted in 2013, 2014和 2015. “There’s no denying that Tina 和 Amy’s comedic chemistry is infectious,” said Lorenzo Soria, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which puts on the event. “We can’t wait to see the dynamic duo return to the Golden Globes stage.” In other words, next year, no one is going to have to cringe through another Ricky Gervais monologue.
